highlights from my last researches

interesting businesses model and consumer behavioral theme
  1. Vegannection - a vegan prepaid card
An England company has created a prepaid card to be used exclusively in 100% vegan establishments. Every time you make a payment using the card, you get 2% back. Every time your friends use their cards, you get 0,5% of their purchase. Choose a beneficiary and they will get 0,5% of everything you buy as well. This can be the person you know or a vegan cause you wish to support through our Charity Program. A niche card focus on making shopping experience more economic, to connect vegans and bring veganism a bit closer to everybody by supporting vegan businesses. Company's website.

  2.  Ecovative - Magic power from mushrooms
They aim to reduce the amount of plastic used in consumer products by growing better materials that are compatible with Earth, like meat alternative products, biodegradable packaging materials, animal-free leather and more. Ecovative has developed a material with the same properties as plastic, but made from the mycelium – the white filaments – of mushrooms. It’s a high-performance packaging solution that’s cost-competitive with conventional foams, yet 100% home compostable (rich in nutrients that help the environment). It has a variety of end materials for applications ranging from textiles, footwear, technical wear, beauty and even luxury handbags. Video about the company

  3.  Made from Cannabis - The billionaire market
A global market that could hit USD15 billion globally in 2019. As the time goes on, more and more products get into market from different areas such as beauty, cosmetics, food and even the PET industry. I did a quick survey on my Instagram and 95% (of about 350 replies) said they would try something related to Cannabis. And about you? CNN.

  4. Be your own chef - Meal kits solutions
What are the main marketing receipt of our times? Companies that help us save time and show us how smart we are because of our choices and let us add our final touch on it. Meal kits continue to show strength: Companies that help you with your dinner, sending ingredients ready to be cooked in a couple of minutes - Even Amazon has their own service. Nielsen data indicated meal kits had seen a 36% growth in just under a year. Have you ever tried a service like this before? How was your experience?

  5. 🧠 Neuralink - Connecting brains to machines
During my reading of Elon Musk biography, in many moments it's really clear that he pursuits solutions for problems that are less explored. Something that caught my attention was that he is looking to build the companies of future and make them reality (mainly ideas from his childhood science fiction movies)... just because someone needs to start them! The mantra "Good ideas are always crazy until they're not" it is his way of doing business. One of those ideas is a brain-machine start-up, full of plans to have human trials in 2020. He plans to connect brains to machine using wires thinner than human hair. The Verge.

  6. Scientists are growing human organs in monkeys
Controversial subject. The idea behind the research is to fashion animals that possess organs made up entirely of human cells. Such animals could be used as sources of organs for transplantation like kidney or liver. In the US, the National Institutes of Health says federal funds can never be used to create mixed human-monkey embryos. However, there is no such rule in China, which is probably why the research is occurring there. This research can help to understand questions of evolutionary distance and interspecies barriers as well. MIT.

imperfection and transparency

two main trends researched over the last days

Imperfection makes sense, mainly nowadays. Have you noticed how many brands and ads are communicating messages like your own natural beauty, home made stuff and less industrialized?

Just think about it! FORKY, a new The Walt Disney Company big star from Toy Story 4 is made of trash! And everybody loved it.

Imperfection and transparency are two trendy consumption movements. People are reading more the back of the products to get information as never before, wanting to know who, how and where the products are made.

One very good example is Imperfect Produce, featured in our vegan report of July.

Billions of pounds of food go to waste every year, often just because they don't look the way that big retail stores want them to. Imperfect Produce think that's crazy, so they've built a network of over 200 farmers and producers, buying these unloved foods (just like the strawberry photo above) directly from producers and deliver it to customers' doors for about 30% less than grocery store prices.

Lero... podcast?!

are you interest in listening instead reading?
I've created an experiment for Portuguese speakers. Along with a friend (Roberto Nunes - former banker in Brazil with more than 20 years of experience) we've launched our first season with 10 episodes (LeroCast).

We chatted about our lessons learned in business, sharing our experiences in launching 3 different companies and insights around what we've researched in the last days.

In a few months we'll be offering in English as well. Do you listen to podcasts? What are your favorites?

vegan-friendly businesses

going beyond veganism: tell me where, who and how you make
Vegan lifestyle has arrived in the mass market and is taking it place in many different industries. Veganism is going mainstream and is no longer “weird” in different markets like health, fashion, beauty, interior design, cars, tourism, detergents, body care... you name it.

This report contains consumption movements like purchasing decisions as forms of activism, 12 different companies as examples (products and services) and 10 ideas to implement in your business.
